A Conversation with Barbara Green Ph.D

“To have the most positive impact on our children’s health and well-being, we must work together as a community in a comprehensive way to provide a safe and nurturing environment where youth have access to the information and resources they need to make healthy decisions.”

All are welcome to join us for — A Conversation with Barbara Green Ph.D — on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at the Paul Pratt Library at 7:30 - 9:30 p.m.

Who is Dr. Barbara J. Green?
Dr. Green is a well-recognized psychologist working with adolescence here in Cohasset and the South Shore area. As a professional with a deep interest in the mental health and well being of children, adolescents and families — her doctoral dissertation was on adolescent depression — Dr. Green helped create Youth Health Connection* a Community Benefits Program of South Shore Hospital. The Youth Health Connection is a unique partnership among health professionals, educators, religious leaders, law enforcement, parents and teens.

*The core values of Youth Health Connection are Health Knowledge and Risk Prevention through Collaboration, Respect, Connectedness and Coalition Building.

Dr. Green has asked that parents email their question to her ahead of time at: bjgreenphd@aol.com and she will do her best to base the evenings conversation on answering those questions you have sent.

Here is some examples of the type of questions the Parent Advisory Council have put together:
• What is considered ‘typical’ behavior in adolescents vs. ‘At-risk’?
• Do you have tips for parents to help our children deal with stress and anxiety?
• How do parents breach the barriers of adolescence?
• As a community, are there examples of proactive steps or models we could learn from?
• What are some of the available resources on the South Shore?

All workshops and presentations are Free - Sponsored by the PSO/Cohasset PAC.

Peer Leaders
Peer leaders will present the final workshop of the year on March 5.   Grade 6 students will participate in an activity called “Fruit Exercise on Stereotyping.” The purpose of this activity is to help the sixth graders understand the relationship between generalizations and stereotypes. It also provides an opportunity for them to understand the role of categorizing in learning and the potential harm of categorizing people. The seventh and eighth grader will participate in the “Strategies for Handling Tough Situations” activity. This activity gives the students an opportunity to develop and practice strategies and skills for confronting issues of prejudice.   A special thanks to our Peer Leaders for their active role in helping to create a more respectful and inclusive school environment. We feel fortunate to have such dedicated and enthusiastic role models.

Flu Symptom Check List for Families and Schools

As cold and flu season approach please, for the health of the entire school community, keep your child home if she/he is ill. Also, be mindful that we do have students and staff in the building who have compromised immune systems for various reasons and are extremely susceptible to infection. With a compromised immune system a cold or the flu may easily become life threatening.
Please help us to keep everyone healthy by reinforcing with your child:
1. That good and frequent hand washing is essential to good health.
2. To keep his/her hands away from their mouth, nose and eyes as these are ports of entry         for germs.
3. That when coughing or sneezing to cover their mouths with a tissue or cough/sneeze into their elbow, followed by good hand washing.
4. To NOT share drinks or food with friends.
5. To try to avoid contact with sick people.
6. If he/she are sick with flu like symptoms (FEVER and cough or sore throat) to stay home. They are not to return to school until they have been fever free for 24 hours WITHOUT the assistance of fever reducing medication.

When your child is going to be out ill, please call the middle school office (781) 383-4205 or the school nurse (781) 383-0853. We would appreciate it if you would indicate if they have been diagnosed with the flu or are experiencing flu-like symptoms.
