The Cohasset Public Schools would like to provide students, parents and teachers with the opportunity to read the transcript of President Obama’s Back to School Address, to view the address and to use it in the classroom or at home as a focus for discussion as you see fit. We encourage you to take advantage of this historical opportunity. A reminder from Commissioner of Education, Mr. Mitchell Chester (DESE) who asks that “if you do have students watch the speech, to please respect the requests of any parents who ask that their child not participate.”
Respectfully,
Dr Denise M. Walsh

Middle School Coffee
Good Evening, this is the Cohasset Middle-High School office calling to invite all middle school parents to attend a coffee hour hosted by the middle school guidance department tomorrow, at 9:30 am. The coffee hour will be held in the middle/high school library.
In addition, I would like to remind parents of our grade 8 curriculum night on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Middle High School Library. This information session will be geared toward those parents of grade 8 students interested in Cohasset High School as a choice for their child's high school experience.

Peer Leaders
The Peer Leaders will facilitate the third workshop to our Middle Schol students on December 4th. Sixth graders will participate in two different activities. First, the Diversity Iceberg Model will be used to demonstrate how students use culturally biased based terms to describe individuals on a daily basis. Following this activity will be a whole group discussion designed as a foundation for students to have a greater understanding of what is meant by "identity". Their next activity is called the Pipe Cleaner. In this hands-on lesson students create identity sculptures with a class discussion on the importance and meanings of symbols that represent each person. Seventh and eighth grade students will participate in a Rumor Clinic activity. In this activity students hear a story that they retell to other students. Because our backgrounds impact what we hear and remember, each student retelling the story becomes "part-author" rather than just "reporter" as they try to pass the exact original story along. This activity provides students with an opportunity to experience the way in which their own background and experiences influence their behavior and perception of others. It also encourages students to consider the impact of their personal attitudes and prejudices in stories and rumors. We look forward to another exciting workshop that provides opportunities for our school community to cultivate and appreciate diversity. To our Peer Leaders, a special thank you, for their continued time and commitment to this program.

H1N1 Flu Update
The Town of Cohasset and the Department of Public Health is providing a limited number of vaccine at this time, and will be offered at the Middle-High School to children in grades 6-12 on Tuesday, November 10, between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon. Parents/Guardians who wish to have their student receive this vaccine need to complete a Town of Cohasset H1N1 Flu Vaccine Consent Form, available by clicking on the link below or in the Middle School or High School offices. These H1N1 Flu Consent Forms will be numbered as they are returned to Mrs. Collins, the school nurse, and vaccines will be administered in first received order. When additional vaccine becomes available, they will be offered to the next in line, according to the receipt of the Consent Forms. Depending on responses to questions on the Consent Form, the nurse administering the vaccine will determine if a child will receive a mist or injectable vaccine, provided the mist is available.
Additionally, H1N1 Influenza Vaccine Information sheets, produced by the Center for Disease Control are available by clicking on the link below. As always, if you have any questions regarding the immunizations or if you have younger students at home, we encourage you to contact your family physician for further direction.

Flu Symptom Check List for Families and Schools
As cold and flu season approach please, for the health of the entire school community, keep your child home if she/he is ill. Also, be mindful that we do have students and staff in the building who have compromised immune systems for various reasons and are extremely susceptible to infection. With a compromised immune system a cold or the flu may easily become life threatening.
Please help us to keep everyone healthy by reinforcing with your child:
1. That good and frequent hand washing is essential to good health.
2. To keep his/her hands away from their mouth, nose and eyes as these are ports of entry for germs.
3. That when coughing or sneezing to cover their mouths with a tissue or cough/sneeze into their elbow, followed by good hand washing.
4. To NOT share drinks or food with friends.
5. To try to avoid contact with sick people.
6. If he/she are sick with flu like symptoms (FEVER and cough or sore throat) to stay home. They are not to return to school until they have been fever free for 24 hours WITHOUT the assistance of fever reducing medication.
When your child is going to be out ill, please call the middle school office (781) 383-4205 or the school nurse (781) 383-0853. We would appreciate it if you would indicate if they have been diagnosed with the flu or are experiencing flu-like symptoms.
